Hot Toys Introduces 300

Although based on actual events 2007’s 300 is more fantasy than fact. The film, based on the 1998 comic book by Frank Miller tells the tale of King Leonides of Sparta and his small army of 300 Spartans who fought to the last man at the narrowpass of Thermopylae, defending Greece from the invading army of King Xerxes of Persia. The purpose of this post isn’t a history lesson, nor is it to knock Zack Snyder’s stylistically praised, ass-kicking man film. In my eyes 300 is one of those rare films that comes along every few years that men world wide gather with their friends to watch; just a bunch of testosterone induced, savagely depraved, modern men vicariously living through the past, whilst drinking soda and eating nachos and popcorn.
The reason for this post is to announce Hot Toys new 1/6th scaled Movie Masterpiece line, 300. Hot Toy’s announced this line last week, however I wanted to wait to post the news on FM when pictures of their first figure were released. There was no doubt that the introductory figure would be that of King Leonidas himself, as portrayed by Gerard Butler. What can I say, the figure is nothing short of phenomenal.
Strikingly scultped by GOX (Jae Sung Eom) and painted by JC Hong, Leonidas utilizes the newly sculpted and developed muscled body which boasts over 26 points of articulation and looks about as close to human flesh as possible for any figure of this scale. This truly is “synthetic” skin. The only complaint I have about the Hot Toys muscled body is the delicate nature of the joints. Hopefully Leonidas will employ the same feature as Dutch from the Predator line, with the skin separated at the shoulders for better movement. An added bonus would also be a separation at the knees, thighs and elbows, but from the production pictures it doesn’t look as if that’s going to happen. Overall, the figure looks phenomenal, and I’ve been reorganizing finances in hopes of being able to get my hands on one.
Leonidas is scheduled for a first quarter 2010 release, which means we should expect an actual arrival during the second or third quarter. For complete specs and some pretty cool photographs check out the Hot Toys web site.
