Alright guys, a sequel to the great Independence Day (1996) is apparently in the works.
The first issue here would have to be whether or not an Independence Day sequel is even a good idea. This first movie was just so good it would very much suck to see a less-than-satisfying part two. Then again if they have all the same key players as the first movie (Devlin, Roland Emmerich, Will Smith, etc.) then maybe it will have the potential to blow us away.
Luckily, according to Latino Review, there is a possibility of everything coming together. 20th Century Fox CEO Tom Rothman said that “it’s up to Roland,” and Roland Emmerich said that “Fox has not quite figured out how to incorporate Dean’s and my deal, and Will’s deal.” So what does all this finger pointing mean? Basically everyone wants to be a part of this project but no one can agree on how to do it. To illustrate this, Emmerich, who insists that “there’s a very really good great story,” out there, gave the Latino Review an illuminating summary of the goings on:
“Dean Devlin and I are still set to make a sequel likely because we’ve found some sort of idea and we approached FOX and FOX has not quite figured out how to incorporate Dean’s and my deal, and Will’s (Smith) deal. Will wants to do it in some sort of a package they can live with. So it’s just been in negations now since forever, and naturally FOX says “Why don’t you do it without Will Smith?” I said Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too. And, so, it’s in limbo and lately the studios are fighting. Like gross players, and Will is a gross player and is probably the only gross player right now who’s worth his gross. So we’ll see what happens. I would love to do it.”
A sequel without Will Smith!? I hope that doesn’t happen because, quite frankly, I am sick of being disappointed by the latest installments to some of the great franchises out there…
