Mad Men Writer Boards Fright Night Remake

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

DreamWorks has hired Med Men scribe Marti Noxon to take another stab at their proposed remake of 1985’s cult classic Fright Night. Noxon is a veteran of TV vampire sagas, having worked on both Buffy and Angel.

The project was thought DOA earlier this year when Screen Gems halted production, however talks of the demise were premature and the film will be produced by Michael De Luca, Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig and was

The original horror comedy was written and directed by Tom Holland, and starred William Ragsdale as a young horror fan who recruits his favorite TV horror host (Roddy McDowall) to battle Chris Sarandon’s suburban vampire.

If you haven’t seen it, by all means check it out – it’s a great, underrated horror comedy that stands up well alongside An American Werewolf in London and Night of the Creeps, with a clear love of monster-fan culture (how many films feature an aging horror host as its wise-sage?).

There are almost as many long-winded editorials opining the current deluge of remakes as there are remakes themselves, so I won’t indulge my skepticism. Both the creature make-up (love that toothy grin, half camp/half Freudian nightmare) as well as the visual effects (by a post-Ghostbusters Richard Edlund) of the original hold up well, and Holland and the cast balance the tone wonderfully, in a mix all too rarely nailed, especially these days.

I approach this one with a skeptical “wait-and-see.”
