Preview Night Pilots Please Comic-Con Crowd

Posted by Danielle in Comics, Events, Reviews on July 23rd, 2009

Preview night at Comic-Con, open only to pre-registered 4-day Comic-Con members and industry professionals, was packed with fans eager to preview advanced screenings of upcoming pilots including Human Target, V and The Vampires Diaries.

The evening opened with Human Target, a new series from Fox starring Mark Valley as Christopher Chance. Based on the popular DC Comics comic book and graphic novel, Human Target is about a brave, selfless man who makes himself a “human target” in order to save the lives of people in danger. Valley’s character got big laughs from the crowd, despite the distraction of the action drama’s thrilling plot. Human Target will premiere on Fox January 17, 2010.

Next up was V, a television series remake of the cult ’80s favorite also revolving around “The Visitors,” which is the name given to the alien race who disguise themselves as humans on earth. The screening’s audience members were obviously drawn to the technological advancement of the new V, in comparison to the original. It is executive produced by the 4400 creator Scott Peters, Jason Hall, Steve Pearlman and Jeffrey Bell and is based on the science-fiction franchise created by Kenneth Johnson. The pilot covers the basic idea of the series – the world awakens to find spaceships hovering over all major cities. This visually appealing scene is followed by aliens who look human and claim to come in peace. However, some, including agent Erica Evans, are skeptical. FM doesn’t want to spoil the pilot for you, so check it out on ABC in 2010.

The final pilot at this year’s Comic-Con International Preview Night included the exclusive screening of The Vampire Diaries which is scheduled to air on The CW Thursday nights at 8 p.m. starting September 10. The show will be sure to grab the attention of Twilight fans, due to a very similar premise and an eye-catching cast. Like Twilight, The Vampire Diaries is also based on a series of young adult novels. Even after sitting through two full pilots, viewers had their eyes glued to the screen for The Vampire Diaries until to the very end. Cheers and applause prove that many seemed to be pleased with the show that will take the former spot of Smallville this Fall.

Comic-Con fans got lucky this year- each pilot was better than the next.

According to Latino Review, the news has been confirmed that Chris Pine, well known as the new Captain James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams eagering approaching Star Trek reboot debut, has been offered the role to star next in the Martin Campbell-directed The Green Lantern as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern.

Warner Bros. first announced the movie adaptation in 2007 with plans set for a December 17, 2010 release date. Filming is scheduled to begin in Australia in mid-September.

Created in 1940 for the All-American Comics #16 by writer Bill Finger and the late artist Martin Nodell, the Green Lantern possesses a power ring that gives the user great control over the physical world as long as the wielder has sufficient willpower and strength to wield it.

Along with DC Comics’ Jonah Hex, The Green Lantern has been classified as a hot, hot title.

Warner Brothers Puts DC on Hold

Posted by Dominic in Movies on January 9th, 2009

In an interview with writer/director David Goyer IESB.net reports that Warner Bothers has put all of their upcoming DC Comic productions on hold for the time being while they apparently do some restructuring.

In the interview Goyer says,

“A lot of the DC movies at Warner Brothers are all on hold while they figure out, they’re going to come up with some new plan, methodology, things like that so everything has just been pressed pause on at the moment. It was the double header of both Iron Man and The Dark Knight coming out, so more than ever I think they’ve realized, I think DC was responsible for 15% of Warner Brothers’ revenue this year, something crazy like that, so they realized that comic books, it’s become a new genre, one of the most successful genres.”

All I can say is it’s about time. Comic book films are like the westerns and sci-fi films of the past and I think I can speak for most of us when I say I can’t wait for what’s to come.

Beyonce Fancies Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman Role

Posted by dominie in Latest News, Movies on November 10th, 2008

In an interview with LA Times, popstar Beyonce Knowles revealed she met with Warner Bros. and DC Comics reps to express her interest in playing their superhero princess, Wonder Woman. My fingers quiver at the possibility of this becoming true. I am a huge fan of Beyonce and her music, however the interview speaks for itself. She does not fit the role, only the costume. Read on for excerpts from her interview.

The recent success of sophisticated comic-book adaptations is the main reason for Beyoncé’s interest, she said, but her focus on Wonder Woman was intensified earlier this year when she saw Lynda Carter’s costume from the 1970s television show on display at the Costume Institute’s “Superhero” show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Wonder Woman costume is an “unforgiving one” she tells LA Times. “I would definitely have to keep it right for that costume. The way that Lynda Carter wore it, she was sooo fine. She was amazing. I saw her costume at the Met. Her waist was unbelievable. It was pretty crazy, actually, her proportions. But I love Wonder Woman and it’d be a dream come true to be that character. It sure would be handy to have that lasso. To make everybody tell the truth? I need that. It would come in very handy.” (more…)

An Original DC Graphic Novel, Joker

Posted by dominie in Comics on October 19th, 2008

MTV Splash Page unveiled a sneak peak of a must-see graphic novel from DC Comics titled Joker from writer Brian Azzarello with art by Lee Bermejo, which arrives just in time for Halloween on October 29. I’m not a collector, but I’ll be sure to pick one of these up. The artwork truly honors the work of the late Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Check it out for yourself.

“Writer Brian Azzarello and artist Lee Bermejo’s “Joker” — which hits shelves October 29 — paints the “Clown Prince of Crime” as a sadistic, unpredictable and absurdly violent psychopath, or in other words, exactly the way the character should be portrayed. And while the story takes place well-outside the realm of Christopher Nolan’s vision of Gotham City, if you liked “The Dark Knight,” “Joker” is a must-have for your bookshelf.”

“The story — narrated through the voice of one of the Joker’s recently-hired goons — follows the just-released-from-Arkham Asylum villain as he seeks to reclaim his rightful spot at the top of Gotham criminal hierarchy by any means necessary. In order to get to that spot again, he’ll have to face the rest of Gotham’s top dogs — including Two-Face, The Riddler, Killer Croc and the Penguin.”

Creepy Casting

Posted by dominie in Movies on October 10th, 2008

According to Variety, W star Josh Brolin (American Gangster, The Goonies) is close to sealing the deal with Warner Bros. to star in the upcoming feature adaptation of DC Comics’ Jonah Hex, written and to be directed by the Crank creators Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine. Andrew Lazar and Akiva Goldsman are producing.

Nothing has been signed yet however, and both Warner Bros. and Brolin’s reps have not officially announced the casting news. I’d love to see this go forward. I have nothing against Thomas Jane (previously thought to play the role), but Brolin’s versatility and range makes him the “chosen one” to take on Jonah Hex, arguably one of DC Comics’ best characters. Created in 1972 by John Albano and Tony DeZuniga, Hex is a disfigured veteran of the Confederate army during the American Civil War.  He was sold into slavery by his father, faced his mother’s turn to prostitution, betrayed during battle, sentenced to have a searing hot tomahawk branded on his face for defending himself in a battle. Hex is one unlucky character.

THR reports that Dominic Monaghan (Lost) and Freddy Rodriguez (Six Feet Under) have been cast in Swiss writer-director Barthelemy Grossmann’s (13 m2) upcoming horror thriller, Fortuna.  The film is one of many that are done in light of the recent state of our economy.

“Set in 2100, Fortuna envisions an Earth where a collapsed economy and climate crises have eliminated the middle class, leaving a few very wealthy and the teeming masses in severe poverty. To give hope and avoid revolt, the elite create Fortuna, a mysterious game where one in a thousand wins a big payday and joins the upper classes. But their hidden goal to “reduce poverty” by 30% over 50 years comes with a deadly price tag.”

Grossmann will also star alongside Monaghan and Rodriguez, playing desperate men who compete in the game that begins lensing on November 10. The film, privately funded by producer Laurent Zilber and co-produced by Scott Duncan, will shoot over a six week span.

Box Office Report

Posted by EricC in Movies on August 18th, 2008

The Dark Knight surpassed Star Wars twice this weekend.  First, it firmly grabbed second place on the All Time Box Office charts with a total now estimated at $471,493,000.  It’s weekend take of $16,790,000 also surpassed the debut of the CGI-animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars which managed a so-so $15,505,000.  The film received mixed reviews and little in the way of anticipatory buzz so its performance over the next week or two will be telling.

20th-Century Fox, which has had a miserable summer, finally got some good news when Mirrors opened with $11,125,000, exceeding studio estimates by 10%. (more…)

Review: Batman: Gotham Knight

Posted by EricC in Comics, Movies, Reviews on July 13th, 2008

Batman Gotham Knight DVDBatman: Gotham Knight is a very clever DVD tie-in to The Dark Knight, opening next week.  The six interlocking stories are said to show audiences Batman’s growing experience from a novice in Batman Begins to more veteran The Dark Knight.

With six different animation teams, three writers, David Goyer (who cowrote BB), Josh Olson (A History of Violence) and Alan Burnett (Batman The Animated Series), tackle the tales and as a result they are all over the place in terms of both quality and relevance.Batman Begins ends very clearly setting up the Joker as the next major villain he battles but if the animated exploits are to be considered, he first took time out to deal with mob warfare, the return of Scarecrow, Killer Croc and Deadshot.  From a storytelling point of view, that’s a lot to swallow.
