Christian Bale seems to be everywhere these days. It is a prime example of quantity over quality. I used to adore Christian Bale in the Empire of the Sun days, but once he got older and became a primadonna I kind of lost interest. While watching Terminator Salvation, I kept trying to decide which scene was the one that he freaked out on that poor crew member. He probably should have saved that freak out on a more worthy performance, because this one was seriously lacking.
Terminator Salvation gives us an in depth look at the other world of Terminator. We see glimpses of it in the other films, but this is the first one that focuses primarily on the story of the resistance after Judgment Day. We see John Connor (a lack luster Bale) inspiring the humans and giving them hope and guidance. You would think that the plot line would revolve around him, but it actually focuses on Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a death row convict who donates his body to Dr. Serena Kogan (Helena Bonham Carter) to become a human machine hybrid. He is Skynet’s secret weapon against the resistance, but what they didn’t predict was that his human side would turn him to the powers of good. He is the only reason John Connor is successful in his mission and survives. Worthington gives an outstanding performance and far outshines Bale.

“I still don’t know how it will play out with this one,” Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told The Los Angeles Times. “They showed me some footage, but I don’t have a feel for the movie. I didn’t see enough. I wasn’t sure who the Terminator was. I don’t know if there is one or if he’s the star or the hero. These are the things that determine the success and how the strong the movie will be.”
The original Terminator was given a private screening of early footage from Terminator Salvation by producers of the current film, coming next May.
“If [director McG] has the T4 and the kind of shots that has the audience thinking, ‘Now how did he do that?’ — then it is Terminator and you can blow everyone away and every record at the box office,” he predicted. “I do hope it creates a spectacle on the screen. That is what James Cameron created.”

Helena Bonham Carter revealed to Sci Fi Wire that she was a last minute replacement in Terminator Salvation, substituting for Tilda Swinton (Constantine).
“I kind of play a baddie, definitely a baddie,” Bonham Carter told Sci Fi Wire. “I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say, but I’m a very bad person.
“Tim [Burton] would have killed me if I hadn’t done it, because he’s such a Terminator fan,” Bonham Carter said of her partner and collaborator.
“I’ve been in big movies before, like [Planet of the] Apes, and Fight Club was big in a different way, and Charlie [and the Chocolate Factory] and Sweeney Todd were big, but I’ve never been in this kind of big popcorn action movie, a male one, an action one.”

At Comic-Con International’s Terminator Salvation panel, a good amount of time was spent lauding the late, great Stan Winston. McG said the film will be dedicated to the man’s memory. Accompanied on stage by a T-600 model, the director held forth without stars (Christian Bale is in Europe promoting his current release).
The director then told the filled room that he’s about halfway completed with principal photography. He and Warner Bros. are thrilled with the footage which gave him a chance to confirm that the rating remains up in the air. If it merits an R, everyone involved will be comfortable with that. (more…)

“We are half way through filming,” McG reports at the Terminator Salvation blog. “Our teaser is in theaters and playing before The Dark Knight. You will see that this is a movie inspired by the first films, but is a true new beginning in that it takes place in the future.
“All three Terminator films took place present day, with Terminators traveling back in time to attack. This picture takes place after Judgment Day. It happened. Everything is gone. The story of the movie is the ‘brink moment’ Reese always talked about.
“From a technical perspective, we have set out to achieve a completely new visual style that hasn’t been seen before. We’re shooting the film on color stock but are using a method inspired by the Oz process which was developed at Technicolor by Mike Zacharia and Bob Olson. Basically we are adding three times as much silver. It creates a surreal texture that is in keeping with the notion of the entire picture – feeling detached from the world we know today.
“Every morning and every night Christian and I work on the story. Sam’s contribution has been excellent. We are committed to putting the story and character first and then supplementing that with action and visual effects. It is our intention to make a film on a large scale with the nuance and subtext of a high quality independent picture.
“The richness of the story is really coming out now. It’s a Prometheus tale really, how creating life creates real responsibility – and if left unchecked, can be our undoing. The entire crew takes the making of this film very seriously. I made a point of hiring key personnel that are passionate about getting this right. Everyone is well versed in the mythology.”

The Clinton News-Record, of all places, broke the news that bodybuilder Roland Kickinger has been cast as a T-800 in Terminator Salvation.
“There’s a very strong scene in the film where John Connor for the first time meets the Terminator, and he doesn’t know if he’s a good guy or a bad guy,” Kickinger told the paper.
“It’s Arnold’s character in the first Terminator. That’s basically my role, but 20 years before, so it establishes how the Terminator [came] about.”

With the second season currently in production, the cast of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles spoke with E!’s Kristin Veitch about what’s in store. First, despite the horrific explosion at the end of the first season, of course Summer Glau returns as the Terminator. After all, she nabbed the Saturn Award for best supporting actress and is too much fun to leave out.
Glau mentioned that “Cameron definitely has some issues after the explosion. And everybody changes after the first episode.”
News includes the fact that Garret Dillahunt and his Cromartie character have been upgraded to series regular status. “I like him,” the actor said of his T-888 alter ego. “They’re really not bad guys—they’re doing their job. He has no hate in him. He’s like: ‘Look, it’s my job, sorry…Gotta snap your neck.’ ” (more…)

Helena Bonham Carter (Sweeney Todd) is headed for the future, playing, we think, a Cyborg in McG’s Terminator Salvation.
The film has been shooting for weeks now in New Mexico and The Hollywood Reporter describes her part as “small but pivotal”.
A first look of the film is expected with The Dark Knight on July 18.

The first glimpse of Terminator: Salvation will be in the form a teaser attached to The Dark Knight so you’ll have extra fun when the film opens on July 18. Speaking of Christian Bale, who stars in both films, we heard Ridley Scott is telling folk he’d love to see Bale as Robin of Locksley in his Nottingham. That revisionist take on the legend will star Russell Crowe as the Sheriff and Sienna Miller as Maid Marian.
Tippi Hedren meets Barbie! In honor of The Birds’ 45th anniversary, Mattel is releasing “this incredible collector’s doll features our heroine being attacked by a trio of fine feathered foes, just like in the movie.” The Birds Barbie is a definite must-have for every fan of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film.
Will Poulter (Son of Rambow) has been given the role of Eustace Scrubb, the Pevensie children’s most annoying cousin, in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Michael Apted will direct the third film in the Narnia series which will bring back Ben Barnes as Prince Caspian, Skandar Keynes as Edmund and Georgie Henley as Lucy.

We’re still figuring out our editorial position on spoilers. In a review, that’s one thing, but to give away a major plot point in a movie that is a year away, that’s something else entirely.Today, we’ll exercise some caution and not discuss the details from Terminator: Salvation that started floating around the web yesterday. If you really want to know what might be happening, the information is easily found. (more…)
